Countering spam

Postby Torstein » Tue Oct 27, 2009 2:10 pm

One major problem many CuteNews.RU users experience is spam. This post is an effort to help those of you who want to get rid of the automated spambots.

CAPTCHA/image verification
CAPTCHA is an obtrusive counter-measure, meaning that your users will have to do something extra to post.

FI-DD's CAPTCHA plugin (standard image verification)http://forums.cutenewsru.com/spam-protection-with-image-confirmation-code-%28captcha%29-t251.html
Torstein's RECAPTCHA plugin (image verification using http://recaptcha.net) http://forums.cutenewsru.com/recaptcha-image-verification-t2988.html

Administrator counter-measures
These are methods that require the administrator(s) to proactively search for spam on the site and add things such as common spam words and Ips to lists. However these methods, when used correctly, should prove to be unnoticable by your users.

Latest comments in Admin Panel (good for spotting spam, also gives direct links to delete and ban ip)

Got more tricks up your sleeve that I haven't linked to? Feel free to post them in this thread!

You need to edit your robots.txt and try and block as many spambots
as you can, search google for bad bots lists and such :)

Here's one site I found that gives you IP addresses to block etc:
Link (You can also try and block them in the IP Ban page in CN RU)

Also a safe way to get those off your back is not to enable
guest comments, if you can. :)

Spam-words nowt work perfect
if you type the word "[url"
and a user try to put this word [url=abcs] the script will not stop him.
