yes you're both right..

there are some major pros and cons to falling in love with cutenews.ru

the pros are obvious.. it's an amazing tool for your website and it's free.. the support is free and we're always working on it

the cons are that there are no official upgrades and that you constantly have to visit the forum and tweak your script itself.. and you get no direct contact with the original coder of the script cause he speaks russian and now works on strawberry and blueberry.. plus you never know when someone will answer your question or if an answer even exists!

FORTUNATELY the script has reached a level where more than most individuals can download it and use it on their website and make it do whatever they need.

the worst part of it all is that sooner or later someday this project will be obselete and we'll all have to find an alternate or deal with the fact that we're using a script that has no support left. i'm not sure where that is going to leave us in the future

time will tell! in the meantime we can do our part by keeping ourselves active here and trying to keep this script alive! you can count on me to stick by it. i'll do my best to keep learning what i can but, FI-DD, i'm truly sorry i'm not a good php coder. i'm greatly envious of you and have tried very hard to keep up but you're leaps and bounds better at it than me. hopefully soon you won't be as busy and your passion for this project will overcome you again. things haven't been the same since you've been slower around here :(

Which parts are changed on April 23rd update? Do i have to re-install all of it, or just the inc/ folder is ok?

Thanks

Most likely you want to overwrite the few files in the root cnr directory and the /inc folder

I think if you overwrite all your cnr you'd be okay as long as you're using mysql? I don't know don't take my word for it lol late and wine, that's all I'll say...

Sort the archive by date and you'll see that the most recent change relates just to /inc/show.news.php

Oh and preview.mdu has also been updated, probably with the format thing I brought up a couple of months back. That's not a major one.

Not sure, it doesn't look to me like only those 2 files got changed. I noticed a change in addnews.mdu & editnews.mdu. Noticed that with latest version line of quicktags is showing even tho I have tinyfck installed, tags stay there, tho they aren't functioning (for obvious reasons cause tinyfck is the editor)

Updating from CuteNews 1.4.6 to CuteNews RU

Postby Ned Flanders » Tue May 12, 2009 4:08 am

Dear all!
Don't know if this is this right place for my post. If not, please feel free to move it.

Im trying to update from cutenews 1.4.6.

I have followed up the following instructions:

1. Install the script
2. Put your old folder /data to path/to/convert/02x
3. CHMOD all tmp-files to 777
4. Open your browser and go to http://yoursite.com/path/to/convert/
5. Choose "02x series to 03x series"
6. Choose what you want to transfer to the new script

What do they actually mean by "installing" (1)? Copying the files to your server? That's what I did at least...

When I do as point 4 tells me to do, I get the following report:

txtSQL Warning: No database selected in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/convert/index.php on line 2

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/head.php on line 98

txtSQL Warning: No database selected in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/convert/index.php on line 2

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/head.php on line 106

- txtSQL to MySQL
- MySQL to txtSQL
- Original Cutenews (cutephp.com) to CuteNews.RU

And when I then I click on the last option, this is what I get:

txtSQL Warning: No database selected in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/convert/02x/index.php on line 7

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/head.php on line 98

txtSQL Warning: No database selected in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/convert/02x/index.php on line 7

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /home/beunings/public_html/cutenews_ru/head.php on line 106
You not admin!

Great! I hope somebody can tell me why I'm so stupid.

Many thanks in advance!

After you copied the files to your server you have to complete the installation by going to www.yourdomain.com/cuteru/index.php. (Change "cuteru" to the directory you copied the files to.)

After the installation you can proceed with step #2 of the update instructions.

Thanks! I have tried to upgrade it, but I got a lot of error reports and it didn't work properly. So I decided to delete CN RU completely from my server and reinstalled it from scratch (so no upgrade). I finally managed to get it running (...I guess, as I have not tested it extensively yet). Funny things is however it has all my news in it! and some of my settings (e.g. my categories). How come? Don't get me wrong: I'm happy with it, but I had it completely removed from my server. Is some part of CN (RU) webbased, so it stored my settings and data during my partly failed previous installation, before I removed it completely? Or where does it get this information from? Funny....

Re: Updating from CuteNews 1.4.6 to CuteNews RU

I have changed all paths from CuteNews to CuteNews RU, so logically news will be presented according to the RU template(s) I’d say.
As I preferred my original CN layout, I have manually copied all CuteNews template content into the corresponding RU template (both “Default”). Nothing happened. I decided to add $template = "Default" in my PHP-lines:
if($_GET['go'] == "" or $_GET['go'] == "news"){
$number = 8;
$template = "Default";
include("cuteru/show_news.php");

And it appeared to work! (that’s what I thought initially) I wanted to add some some new RU features to the CuteNews RU (e.g. number of views) but it didn’t work out: nothing changed. It seemed like $template = "Default"; is referring to Cutenews instead of RU. Just for testing purposes I decided to create a copy of Template Default and changed it to News (and of course changed $template =”Default”; correspondingly). Again nothing changed. However, when I add a new article, only this very article comes in a complete different (RU) layout….???

I guess my old news articles (imported from CN) are still using CN templates, and news that I add is using its own RU template, which I can’t cvhange/select by e.g. “ $template = "Default";”
What template is RU actually using standardly? And how can I change it ? Ohhh, RU is giving me headaches… Let's just keep on going :D

Remarkable. I have figured out that you also need to set which RU templates to use in "manage categories"!....but still, how do I change or set the default template (in this case also called Default) in case I haven't specified a specific template for a specific category?

Anyway, it still not working properly; my new news (which have not been imported from CN) may be displayed according to the selected template in "manage categories", my "old" CN news is not taking this lead... It's still displayed in some funny RU layout, although their catergory has also been specified.

When I put in "$template = "Default";" again, my old news is being displayed like the orginal CN "Default" template, and the articles created in RU use that funny RU template again, which is not the RU "Default" template, as in this template I has entered all content of the Default CN template. They should be the same!

Are you getting what I'm trying to say? Does it make sense?

P.s.: I have just deleted CN (not RU)..... but it didn't make a difference.

:idea:
I think it's fair to let any potential replicant know that I have found the cause of my problem. RU has this great "clear cache"-button. You need to click it before any change will take effect. You see you other computer nitwits out there: it's about not giving up. Well, forget about it.

Hey Ned Flanders! Glad to see you making some progress into the world of CNR. Hope you are delightfully surprised. The journey isn't always easy into CNR, but it's always worthwhile. We're a pretty unique group of smart people here.

Sorry you had trouble with the Clear Cache mystery :P odd, yes.. big deal? no.. where do you suggest we mention this fact for other new users?
